I’m a relaxed, easy-going photographer, and have created images for happy clients with Andy Brown Photography since early 2008. I’ve built a reputation for thinking on my feet, dealing with changing situations, and keeping the people I interact with nice and relaxed.
I didn’t pick up the camera when I was 7 like some other photographers, I was learning to skateboard then. As a teenager I developed a huge appreciation for the photographs in skateboarding magazines taken by legends such as Mike Blabac, Dave Chami, Andrew Mapstone and David Read.
Photography is a passion that has caught up with me later in life at the slightly over-ripened age of 24 alongside my studies as a graphic designer. Timing was good then as we had the opportunity to learn and waste a lot of film, and to develop black and white prints in the darkroom. As the course transitioned we also got to put our skills to practice in a digital environment. I majored in photography graduating with a Degree in Visual Communication from the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.
During my studies I began to shoot a variety of client work, and had the opportunity to shoot alongside some very talented professionals. As my skills sharpened, I ventured into shooting my own gigs and eventually my first wedding in 2008. A far cry from skateboarding photography, but it was an event that was filled with high emotions and a truly positive atmosphere — and I was responsible for capturing it to be a story told for generations to come — that’s the career I’ve become addicted to.
Currently I’m one of the many talented Christchurch wedding photographers specialising in the art of wedding photojournalism. Other areas I work in include event photography, commercial photography and where it all began; skateboarding photography. I’m also a staff photographer for Cheapskates Skate Skool, covering many of their events, helping promote skateboarding to the younger generation, and spotlighting some of these skaters the BroFile feature.
When not hiding behind the lens, you’ll likely find me designing stuff, trying to finish my coffee before it gets cold, or chilling with my wife and 3 awesome kids.
