Straight out of the lens

One of my favourite bands Strung Out returned recently and blew the small but loyal Christchurch crowd away. The itch to pick up the guitar and find some time to jam again was definitely re-ignited. I was lucky enough to capture these shots from varying locations of the moshpit; quite a mission getting thrown around with an SLR camera in one hand and a flash in the other, possibly stupid… but great fun.

So I’ve finally got my computer back up and running, meaning I have heaps of work to catch up on. A couple of weeks ago Christchurch had the pleasure of Auckland’s (or should I say Taranaki’s) melodic punk act Kitsch return for a long awaited South Island tour. I’ve been a fan of these guys for many years now, and seeing our local band None Left Standing get the tour support was the icing on top. Kitsch have just released a new e.p. “Destroy The Lines”, and their new songs held up well live, if not even better than the recording in my opinion. Credit to them because that doesn’t happen often.
The Christchurch crowd was on form as usual, though since I’ve been hibernating from the local punk scene, the moshpit has since evolved into a full on wrestling match—interesting.
Anyway, scroll down and check out a few shots from the night—enjoy!

Recently our local camera store Photo & Video has been introducing some in-house competitions. It’s really nice to see something like this; as one of their staff members said,
“It’s really nice to be involved in the photography for a change, rather than just the equipment”
Anyway, as a result, I entered the first two comps and came runner up in both! The first shot above was for the Summer Comp, featuring two of my rugrats copying what Daddy does. We were shooting a Monarch butterfly about to emerge from its chrysalis—I had to go inside quickly and left the camera set up on the tripod. When I came back out these two were taking turns looking through the viewfinder and reeling off hundreds of frames, the decision was either save my camera, or run and grab my other body and get this shot; I think I made the right decision. A post-production technique I’ve been meaning to have a nudge at for a while now is HDR (High Dynamic Range). It’s basically where you can layer multiple exposures to create an image that has as much detail in shadows and highlights as possible, and what you end up with is a surreal looking image that almost looks like a painting or illustation. Friend and fellow photographer Kurt Langer gave me a quick intro and below is my first result. Still some work to go learning and experimenting, I’ll keep you up to date with any future dabblings.
