Forever Flying — The Final Show

Flying Solo are one of those bands if you’re in or around Christchurch, you’re more than likely to have heard of them, heard them, or even better met with them. When I used to play in a band a number of years ago, we played a few shows with Flying Solo and they always brought a impassable charismatic energy to to the stage. 8 years later, I was asked to photograph their last show as their members depart into the wide world. Thomson Bowl Jam

Lindsay Bae

The recent Thomson Bowl jam was a pretty hectic event to shoot, worming my way through a fine gap of people and a 10foot drop, and that gap was mostly intertwined with kids, dogs, scooters, other photogs and videographers. Least to say this was still nothing compared to what the photographers up in Wellington for the Bowlarama had to battle with — 50 odd other photographers? One good thing about Christchurch!

During my day I managed to capture this moment of Lindsay Bae straight after his epic run and thought I’d share it. You can see the rest of my photos from the day over at the Cheapskates Skate Skool website.

Shooting in 8º below

I recently caught up with the Backflips Clothing crew to put together a catalogue shoot for their winter range. Decisions of where to shoot began in Timaru, then went down to Queenstown, then back to the snowroom in Christchurch’s Antarctic Centre. At -8ºC for about 5-6 hours of shooting, the models whether they were wearing penguin or polar bear suits, or t-shirts did a fantastic job. My batteries took a hammering though… and this is what snowboard/ski photogs deal with all the time, and minus another 10–20ºC!

My kids came over to the office this afternoon, so I set up a camera on a tripod outside and let them have a play. I captured this shot when Lexi decided she would start showing off… love the expressions.

A few weeks ago I was commissioned by Sport Canterbury to get an image of New Zealand’s up and coming cycling athlete, Anton Cooper. By hanging myself and a remote flash out of the passenger window of my car while in motion, we were able to capture the feeling movement and energy. Here’s the final result…

Here in Christchurch there’s a growing, vibrant skate scene. One of the key players in getting young skater involved are the Cheapskates Skate Skool. They organise and put on regular competitions and jams throughout the city and Canterbury region. I headed over to Hornby for one of their events recently to capture some of the action.
